Debbie and Other Corn Researchers,

In my post number 1789, I mentioned that I remembered running across an article stating that Noah Parr Corn adopted a Cherokee orphan. I couldn't find my source then, but have now found it, and it turns out that Ezekiel was the supposed Cherokee orphan. The source documentation follows.

From “The Heritage of Henderson County North Carolina, Volume II, Sesquincentennial 1838-1988,” George Alexander Jones, Th.M, Ph.D—Editor. Copyright 1988 by the Henderson County Genealogical and Historical Society, Inc.

On page number 172-173, Article number 45 entitled: “Dora Agusta Capps Blackwell”, the following is written about Noah Parr Corn and his son Ezekiel:

“Dora’s great-grandparents on her mother’s side of the family were Noah Parr Corn (25 January 1802—9 October 1874) and Elizabeth Capps (19 November 1798—2 March 1872). Noah Parr Corn was a descendant of John Peter Corn, his father, and Mathew Corn, his grandfather. Noah Corn was a dedicated preacher and religious man. He taught God’s word to everyone near and far. He was determined to teach the word of God to the Cherokee Indians. During that time period, he and his wife Elizabeth Capps, adopted a young orphaned Cherokee boy. They named him Ezekiel and he was reared with his brother, George, who was born just six months earlier. Ezekiel Corn grew up and married Letha Anne Galloway 18 Jun 1854. Thus, making Dora’s mother, Sarah, one-half Cherokee.”

On page 173, a photograph is included of Sarah Capps (and others). She has dark hair worn in long braids, appears to be dark complexioned, and does have the appearance of possibly having Cherokee heritage.

The article was written by David Alten Martin and he credits his sources as personal and family knowledge, court records, and “Cornstalks and Preachers” by Lois Dorsey.

I just wonder if anyone else has any knowledge of Ezekiel having been adopted and/or being Cherokee?

I find it doubtful that he was full-blooded Cherokee because of the description you researched which showed his eyes as being blue! I wouldn't think that blue eyes would be typical of a full-blood Cherokee.

Anyway, just thought I would share this finding and see if you or others have comments.

And thank you for sharing your finding about Ezekiel. Death from scurvy! These old records show how hard our ancestors lives were!

Janice
