Hi, my name is Cindy Corley. I am a granddaughter of Ben Alexander and Bettie Mae Hatton Corley. Their son, Aubrey Horton Corley, is my father. Volentine or Valentine Columbus Corley, Ben Corley's father, died when Ben was about 6 or 7 years old. The horse Valetine or Val was using to plow with, dragged him to his death. Ben Corley's father known as Val Corley did not die in 1952. I know this because I heard my Grandfather, Ben Corley, tell the stories of his mother and father's death many times. Ben Alexander Corley's mother died when he was three days old, after she was thrown from a run away wagon. She was pregnant with Ben at the time of the accident. His young life was very harsh and sad as a result of loosing both parents at such an early age. Ben Corley was a bootlegger and he did gamble. His son's did the "farming" when the family lived in Opelika, Texas. He may have owned and operated a general store. He could not read nor write, but he performed some kind of duties for the Henderson County Court system or worked for an attorney before he was asked to leave the county in about 1930. Ben first relocated his family to Monday, Texas and then to Brownwood, Texas. The rumors circulated about "Doc" Carlton Ford Corley's conception seem to have been generated by a malicious daughter-in-law who apparently was very jealous of her mother-in-law, Bettie Mae Corley. The final home for Ben and Betty Corley, in Brownwood, Texas, did burn to the ground after their death. It has been alleged that their grandson did set the fire. "Speedy" Ernest Loyd Corley is living and resides in Corpus Christi, Texas. Gladys Marie Corley Harcher, lives in Las Angeles, CA Dorothy Genevive Corley Waters, "Gennie", lives in Vista, CA.
