The CORDES family were a distinguished French family, members of whom arrived in South Carolina in the late 1600's and early 1700's. The South Carolina CORDES family were French Huguenots (Protestants) fleeing persecution in Catholic France. They became wealthy and influential planters in the Charleston area of South Carolina and up into North Carolina. If you like, I can give you a long list of sites to check out, but the best place to start is Cindi Howell's HUGUENOT web page. ANCESTRY.COM also has a lot of CORDES information. Good luck, and Happy Hunting! If it turns out that you have in your family tree a young lady by the name of ELLINOR CORDES, b. May 23, 1744 in Charleston, SC, let me know, because you and my husband would be cousins.
