It was common in Germany to give a new baby several names, but the child ended up using just one. In fact I've seen where several children were given all the same names, but they each used a different one.

I'm trying to trace a Johann Christian Hinrich Albrecht Cordes, born Nov. 9, 1811 in a small village in the Province of Hanover. He came to America in about 1832 with an older brother. I suppose it is possible he returned to Germany and at a later date came back to America. It's a long shot, but you never know when you'll make THE connection.

Have you found any additional information about your Johann Hinrich Cordes since your original post? The 1880 census lists more than 300 Cordeses living in Missouri with over 200 of them in St. Louis County. I have access to the 1880 census data. If you need me to look up anything, let me know.
