I just re-read my earlier correspondence from a Martin Cordes who has lived in Germany all his life. His explanation of the Cordes name is: "Cordes name comes from surname of Konrad, Kurt and Cord. In 12th & 13th centuries family names did not exist, (opposite of what I wrote earlier)and a child had a first name ONLY. He was identified as 'Heinrich, Cord's son'. Cord being the first (only) name of father. This evolved into Cordsen and Cordes"
