Some years ago when researching my Cordes family that migrated from Germany in late 1840s, I corresponded with a man by the name of Cordes from Germany who explained that the name evolved from the practice in the real old days of using only surname say of Cord and no one had a "first" name and they began distinquishng children as being: "Cord's son" and this evolved into Cordeson, Cordson and Cordes.
