Shawn,
I'm tracing my mother's family tree. I'm not sure if I have the right
Benjamin Corder. This Benjamin lived in Tazwell Co., VA at least when his son
John Milton Corder was born (supposedly in 1789). Benjamin Corder was said
to have married Rebecca Runyon. They seemed to have moved to Ohio later.
I'd appreciate knowing if this is the same Benjamin Corder you have
researched and, if so, any information you are willing to share.
Thank you for your help.
Dawn

viii.       Elijah Corder, Sr., died Abt. 1807 in Tazewell County, Virginia (Died of a rattle snake bite?).

Notes for Elijah Corder, Sr.:
Elijah Corder Sr died as a young man in 1807 after the personal property taxes had been taken for that year and before 25 Aug 1807 when the administrators of his estate were appointed.

That he died of rattlesnake bite may be deduced from the following quote from page 444 of the book "Tazewell County" by Louise Leslie:

"A grave in the edge of the big Glade where one Corder that died of the Bite of a rattlesnake is Buried." This earliest known reference to a Burke's Garden grave is found in a memorandum of agreementr made between James Thompson and Robert Sayers, June 18, 1808.

This is one of the twenty-four known small cemeteries or single graves found here (i.e. in Burkes Garden).

Shawn, The Wayne County,KY families came down from Tazewell Co. VA and they
go back to Edward Corder, Frederick Co. VA. I do not work on this line, but I
have helped others. I know this David Corder and I know the other David
Corder that appears in Wayne Co. Some of the researchers of this line want to
say that there were only one Claborne/Claiborn, etc Corder, but there were
two. They were not the same age, but if someone want to argue, I just drop
them and that is what I have done on two of this line recently. I did tell
one that he needed to read the census.

Generation No. 8

       128. Edward Corder I, born Abt. 1702 in England.

Notes for Edward Corder I:
The below information was found at http://users.panola.com/lindgren/corder.html by Dr. Carl Edwin Lindgren

Edward was a laborer in England in the early 1700's. On 6 December 1721, he was arrested and tried at the Old Bailey where he pleaded not guilty "for I was drunk and knew not what I did'. He was sentenced to Newgate Prison ("a well known London prison, long demolished, which housed offenders from London and Midddlesex."). The lenient judge in charge reduced the amount stolen to L. 0.01 p, L 0.78p, and L 0.16d to avoid sentencing Edward to execution. [1]

He arrived on the Gilbert (ship) with 80 other convicts (85 originally with five dying in transit) on 16 July 1722 at Annapolis , MD. According to the work White Servitude in Colonial America, the average age of those transported from London between 1720-1724 was (18.87) or almost 19 years of age. [Note from Bonded Passagers to America -- CORDER, (CAYDOR) EDWARD sentenced Jan 1722. From Surnames Weekly (pg. 281) 'Corday is dialect for (Corder, Roper). It is an occupational name for one who makes cord or rope.] Edward, became an indentured servant in the mid 1720s. [2]

1738 ORANGE COUNTY , VA (near Winchester) Edward Corder petitioned for a road to Jost Hyte's Mill. Later (1751) he became a favored tenant of Lord Fairfax (i.e. Thomas Fairfax, 6th Baron Fairfax of Cameron) who was born in Kent England and died in Virginia in 1781. His cousin's (Sir William Fairfax) daughter Annie married Lawrence Washington, George Washington's elder brother. (Lease on file - 1751- Deed Book, Frederick Co. Courthouse relating to Edward's leasing land on Greenway Court.)

Edward worked for George Washington at the start of Washington's pre-military career as a surveyor for Lord Fairfax. Thomas had over 5,000,000 acres which stretched between Rappahannock and Potomac rivers in the Northern Neck of Virginia). Edward assisted George on one of his first surveys of a region that became known as "Little Washington" This town in Virginia today claims the title "The First Washington of All." "The town was surveyed and plotted on the 24th of July (old style), 1749, by then 17-year-old George Washington, assisted by chairmen John Lonem and Edward Corder. The town was officially established by the Virginia General Assembly in 1796, and incorporated in 1894" Note Guidebook to Virginia's Historical Markers (pg. 13)

1758 - Edward supported Washington for the House of Burgesses.

Estelle Corder's notes:

John and Elizabeth lived in Frederick County, Virginia and "appears" to be the son of Edward Corder of Frederick County, Virginia.

Yes, her maiden name was Branson, a Quaker, and she married the John Corder
who owned land in Hampshire Co. while living in Frederick Co. This John moved
on down to Tazewell Co. later into present day Washington Co. MO and his
daughters settled in Green Co. TN. Is this the same Elizabeth you are talking
about. If so, there is another Corder girl that was named Margaret Corder who
was dismissed as well as Elizabeth because they married contrary to
discipline of the Quaker faith. Estelle

Day Mo. Yr.: 7 1 1765
Person Disowned: Elizabeth (Branson) Corder
Reason for Disownment: Married contrary to discipline

Elizabeth and Margaret Corder was disowned by the Quakers because they did not marry in the Quaker community. Elizabeth Corder married John Corder who live next door to the Branson family and Elizabeth was a Branson. John took the daughters and left Virginia. They can be found in present day Montgomery Co. Mo. records. as some land title had to be cleared. John and his married daughters show up in court records and they were no longer living there. We can find his married daughters in Greene Co. TN. When Elizabeth Corder's father died, she is listed as Elizabeth Corder, but when her Mother died, she is listed as Elizabeth Branson. I own the Hopewell books and the Branson was active in this Quaker church. So far I have not found any proof on Margaret. I don't know who she is. One thing that bothers me is the children of John and Elizabeth Branson Corder. Since she was not considered married, does that mean the children were not legal in the Quaker faith? One thing I do know is that the community could not associate with the family as they were excluded. This may be why John took his daughter when he left Frederick Co.
