Hi Mike,
There apparently was no "Mary Eleanor Sloat" (probably a corruption or misspelling of common SW VA surname "Sluss", which was originally "Sloas"). The John Corder you're referring to was son of Edward Corder Sr. of Greenway Court (Frederick County, VA). Edward Sr. was deported from London in the early 1720's and ended up in Virginia. (His wife's name is unknown, although she did outlive him, and apparently died in the first decade of the 1800's). Edward Sr. had two known sons, Edward Jr., and the John you're referring to. I actually descend from both of them. The John in question did indeed marry Elizabeth Branson (of the Quaker family) and they had several daughters. I can't recall any sons off the top of my head. Anyway, John eventually apparently separated or divorced Elizabeth, and moved through the valley of Virginia, into Tennessee, and on into Missouri where he died. He had served in the militia during the revolution, but I found a notice where he was wanted as a deserter.
I don't know where that "Sloat" name came from, and it's caused a lot of people to go off on wild goose chases. Maybe he took up with a Sloat/Sloas/Sluss in Tennessee after leaving Elizabeth Branson Corder in northern Virginia. Who knows? The mother of his children was Elizabeth Branson Corder, so I don't worry too much about the Sloat name.
