Hi Stuart,
Nice to hear from you again. If Joseph is your man you would need to look in the parish records for his father's birth around 1654.
If your ancester is John (1699)as you originally thought that would make him 37years old when he married Abigail so I don't quite see your problem other than they did not name their children after the family, again though to find a connection you would have to trawl through the parish records. I have gone through all my records and can't find any links what so ever. Sorry.
