Hi Donna,
It's nice to hear from you. I haven't heard from anyone from my grandmother's family in a long time. My grandmother was Ethel Maude Sapp Daross. She was the eldest of the Sapp children. I met your grandmother, who I called Aunt Bert, when I was about 5 years old and we were visiting Aunt Belle in Houston. I remember riding in a motor boat with Uncle Harry. I also saw her at Aunt Belle's funeral. I have a photo of your father and one of his brothers when they were little boys (my grandmother called him A.J., I think it is Tommy with him). I also have a photo of Tommy in his Navy uniform, and a photo of Tommy and the brother my grandmother called Bubba. I also have a group photo of Anna Maloney Sapp with her daughters Ethel, Belle, Edith, and Alberta (Alberta was about a year and a half). I have a photo of Anna and Tom Sapp when they were young. You can contact me at my email, and I can send you scans of these photos.
I was also writing to Shorty and Tiny. I found out in Oct., while visiting other cousins in San Antonio, that Tiny has Alzheimers. I had called her, and asked if her mother was Edith Sapp, but she said no. Her grandson called back and said she and her husband both had Alzheimers. Shorty also sent me the photos of David and Nancy, my grandmother had the same eyes as Nancy. Shorty told me a lot about Anna Maloney. I think it was her father who was half Indian. He was James H. Maloney, and I have found him in the census records (if it is the correct James Maloney). He was born in Alabama in 1834, his father was Norman Maloney, born 1799 in Conn., and his mother was Oley or Olive, born about 1817 in N.C.__ so she was probably the Indian. In the 1850 census they were living in Greene Co, TN. James married Rebecca Smith in 1855. In 1860, both families were living in Strawberry Plains, Knox Co., TN. In 1870 and 1880, the family of James Maloney was living in Dandridge, Jefferson Co., TN. Anna and her brother Albert (the only sib my grandmother mentioned--there were six others) are listed in these censuses. I'm not sure when James died, I heard he was killed when he was throw from a horse. I also don't know when the family came to White Co., TN, where the Sapps lived. Anna married Tom Sapp on 6 Oct. 1890 in Sparta, White Co., TN. My grandmother Ethel was born in 1892.
I have found a lot of info about the Sapps. Tom Sapp's father, David Crockett Sapp, was in the Civil War. He was in Co. H of the 28th Consolidated TN Infantry. David and Nancy Corder were married on 3 July, 1861 in White Co., TN. David's parents were Benjamin Sapp (b.1796 N.C. d. 1858 TN; I found his grave on a visit to Sparta in 1985) and Elizabeth McInnes (b. ? N.C. d. before 1845 TN). This Benjamin's father was also Benjamin (b.1765 MD d. about 1830 TN). This is the Benjamin who came to TN with his brother Jesse. I have no info on his wife. His brother Jesse lived in Bledsoe, Co. and Warren Co., TN, while Benjamin moved on to White Co., TN. To confuse things, Jesse also had a son named Benjamin. Jesse and Benjamin's father was also named Benjamin (b.1730 Kent Co., Delaware d. 1790 Stokes Co., N.C.) His wife's name was Dorothy. He was in the Delaware militia during the French and Indian War. Benjamin #1's father (our sixth great-grandfather) was Henry Sapp (b. 1698 d. 1743 in Kent Co., Delaware). His wife was Anne Moore (her family tree goes back to the 1300's in England). Henry had a will, which you can find online. His father and grandfather were both named John. The first John came from England to Maryland in 1650. I have all of this posted on my family tree at Ancestry.com.
Since we live in El Paso, TX, we didn't get to Houston too often to visit the relatives. We usually stayed with Aunt Belle when we went there. I met some of Aunt Edith's grandchildren (Norma's, a.k.a. Sister's, kids) who were about my age. I met Aunt Edith once when she came to visit my grandmother. I met our great-grandfather Tom Sapp when I was about 5 years old. He was sitting in an old-fashioned wheelchair on the sidewalk in front of Uncle Dave's store. I wasn't sure who he was, but I remember that I sat on his lap and that he had whiskers. My aunt said that when he saw my grandmother, his daughter, whom he hadn't seen in about 15 years, he said "Is that you, Ethel? Hell, you look worse than I do!" I don't think Dave or his wife Della ever came out to say hello. I know that my grandmother did not like Della.
I would be happy to share more family history with you,
and can email scans of photos for you. You can contact me at: ndaross1@elp.rr.com.
