Corbin Genealogy DNA Study

Based on the posted messages on this genealogy forum, there are apparently descendants of both Henry Corbyn of Old Rappahannock Co., VA and John Corbin (born circa 1671) of Richmond Co., VA. There has been speculation about the relationship of these two men in several publications, including "Allied Families of Read, Corbin, Luttrell, Bywaters", by A. M. Prichard. Prichard made a number of errors in the genealogy of the early Corbin family based upon extant records, and the claim he made of a connection between Henry and John was speculative.

There are apparently some 18th century family records and documents from the family of John Corbin that are currently being transcribed by a Corbin family researcher that suggest a possible link between Henry and John. However, since these records post-date the critical events by more than 50 years, their value in "documenting" the family relationships are limited.

Fortunately there is currently technology available to scientifically prove or disprove the family ties of Henry Corbyn and John Corbin. There are several companies that conduct these studies. I am aware of several families that have initiated similar DNA studies to establish a link between a colonial immigrant and his reputed family in Europe. The technique is described in brief below:

DNA fragments from a buccal smear (i.e taken on a swab from the inside of the mouth) are used to determine the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) of a group of individuals. The results are expressed as probabilities that individuals have a MRCA within a certain number of generations, not to the nearest generation. The current technique can only trace along two ancestral lines: the paternal and maternal lines. It doesn't currently allow for the identification of common ancestors along bilateral lines (mixed paternal and maternal ancestors).

Since the goal is to evaluate the link, if any, between the two Corbin families, the study would require male Corbin volunteers (i.e. Corbin surname, with established male pedigree back to either Henry Corbyn or John Corbin) from both branches, preferably at least two from each family. Are there any volunteers for such a study? The cost of the DNA analysis is not prohibitive and the funding of the project can be discussed if enough participants can be located.
