According to a book "The Coppyns of Kent 1300 to 1800" privately printed at The Leadenhall Press, Ltd: 50 Leadenhall Street London E.C in 1900 and compiled by one John Coppen, there had been a John Coppyn/Coppen/Coppin for a period of 450 years dating from one John Coppin who helped to build a market cross near Canterbury in 1446.This was the first recorded use of the double "p". Therefore if you are looking for a John Coppen you are really looking for a needle in a haystack.
