The English (Yorkshire) Copley clans.....

Hello and a jolly good day to one and all. I am so excited finding this forum (can you tell that I am new to it).....anyway I came over here to the States in the late 70s and am a member of one of the four original Yorkshire Copley clans and just wanted to share some insight on our heritage.
We can trace our ancestors to approximately 760AD (though there is another York clan that predates us by about 40 years)...anyway as best we can tell he was one of three brothers who became an indentured trainee smithy with the Guild of Craftsmen in the (then) village of York (aka Ebor and Eboracum) he finally became one of the four village coppersmiths and was named 'cop' from the village (olde english word for village back then was commonly 'ley') hence Copley. We know that a lot of the York Copleys were punished and were shipped off to the colonies (the States and Australia) under horrible conditions - they wqere guilty of such crimes as the taking of a loaf of bread. Additionally about 30 Copley clan migrated to the States between 1780s and 1810.
I am currently working on contacting relatives of many of those who were banished to the colonies and have had great success to date.
I hope you keep up the good work:)
Cheers,
Chris Copley
