hi Alison by chance I was looking for information about my grandfather Adam Copland who was married to Edith Simpson in Aberdeen,1898 when I came across your search. Your Edith Agnes Copland Simpson sounds very much like my aunt Edith who was eleven years older than my Mother (born in 1904). Edith was living in London for the last part of her life. She and my mother didn't see much of each other but I do know that Edith was mother to two girls - one of whom was called Violet and (the other I have forgotten). Aunt Edith I know was married twice and her first husband died in the first world war. I know she was ( according to my mother, Flora)pretty, a good figure skater, but a bit of a good time girl and one for the lads... I suppose she got pregnant and came to London to have her baby Donald Cruickshank quietly adopted. She never talked of it and I doubt my mother knew of her son. I knew Edith well and liked her a lot but she ended up quite hard up and rather jealous of my mother who had married ' well'. Adam Copland Edith's ( adopted father?) was by all accounts was a drunken bastard. Agnes, Edith and Flora lived in fear of him. He was cruel. When Agnes died in 1914 my mother was left a bereft 10 year old. Edith looked after the home and her father but my mother was shipped off to live with their aunt I imagine Edith married Cruickshank as quickly as possible to get away from Adam Copland. I found an odd birth certificate for Agnes Copland daughter Edith - suggesting that she was not Adam's daughter but the illigitimate daughter of a Charles Farquharson - a local farmer. I cant work that one out - but Agnes and Adam Copland were married after Edith was born. I hope that is useful and I hope this reaches you. Do email me if you get this. Is your grandfather still alive? Regards Notify Administrator about this message?
