I would like to make a contribution even though I cannot answer the question directly. It seems that the respnse from Dave lists a danish or scandinavian word whereas the koppenheffer/copenhaver line I am descended from is German. The original immigrant was Wolfgang son of Jacob Koppenheffer of Rublingen Wurttemburg Germany. This family came to Lancaster co Pa in 1728 and 1732. Given names include Thomas Simon Heinrich. Family had many German inlaws with 36 members of family fighting in Rev. War. My line later went to Wythe co Va. and then Missouri.
