John Copeland of 1635 VA is not related to Lawrence Copeland in Massachusetts

Early DNA testing shows that there is no link between the John Copeland who arrived in 1635 to Isle of Wight County, Virginia (DNA haplotype R1a) and the Lawrence Copeland family of the 1600s in Norfolk County, Massachusetts (DNA haplotype R1b). Researchers may want to re-look and update their family histories, especially for Joseph Copeland/Mary Woodley associated with Taberers.

For Copelands of Virginia, early DNA results show that these families have significantly greater odds of being distantly associated with the Lawrence Copeland family of Massachusetts (County Yorkshire, northwest England):
1. Copelands last known to have been in the 1760s/1770s in Charlotte County, VA, then jumped to Oglethorpe/Green County, Georgia by 1785.
2. James Copeland line that had been in Spartanburg Co., SC after the Revolutionary War, then associated with DeKalb Co., AL. This line is thought to trace back to Coull, County Aberdeen, Scotland.
3. Copelands that had been in Augusta/Rockingham County, Virginia by 1750s and had associations with Boones, Hentons, Montgomerys, and Corrys/Currys.
4. Samuel and Ruth (Hare) Copeland of about 1800 in the Chuckatuck, Isle of Wight/Nansemond Co., VA area.
