Hi Caroline,
I just have information, no documented proof, that Nancy Mills was the daughter of Mary Mills and James (??) Mills.
Mary Mills married James Underwood before 1792 (his second wife) after the death of James (??) Mills.Nancy Mills, married to John Copeland, Jr., is listed as a stepdaughter in James Underwood's probate records in 1823 in Laurens District, South Carolina. (Book E, Page 333.)
Do you, by chance, know what Mary's maiden name was?Mary nee Mills Underwood born about 1762 died in 1839 in Perry County, Alabama, and is buried in the Fairview Presbyterian Church Cemetery, along with numerous other Underwoods. These are my husband's ancestors. (Robert Underwood born July 21, 1792, son of James Underwood and Mary nee Mills Underwood is the direct line.Robert Underwood married Patience Holland in 1814 in Laurens District, South Carolina.)
I found in a book from Perry County that Mary Mills was born in Ireland and came to America with her parents when she was a small child. It doesn't say who Mary's parents were.
When was Nancy Mills Copeland born and when and where did she die? What happened to Nancy Mills Copeland?Did she stay in South Carolina when the Underwood family went to Alabama?I only have her name and who she married ... so with additional information, I will add her to the family!
Also, at Duncan's Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Laurens County, there is a monument which lists John Copeland -- it doesn't say whether it was junior or senior -- as having served in the Revolutionary War.John's name is among a list placed there by the DAR.
Thanks.
