I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck in tracing the parentage of the illegtimate children of the Cootes in Cootehill.

I can trace a James Coote who was born in the early 19th c in Cootehill (per his gravestone) to Mullingar and then to America in the mid 19th c where he died in NYC on April 3 1857.He had three children....Judith Coote (baptized in Mullingar on October 10, 1829), two sons, Patrick and Christopher (Christopher was born May 1,1833 in Mullingar).

Family lore has it that he wanted to convert to Catholicism which angered his Protestant father....he then left for Mullingar where he married a Margaret Farrell .
Was he possibly an illegitimate son of the Earl of Bellamont? I have read that The Earl of Bellamont named all his illegitimate children in his will but the will perished in the fire in Dublin Castle in the last century.

Family lore also claims he was from a wealthy family.

Scant details ....can anyone identify this man and help me take my research back another generation?

Thanks for reading this!
