George Washington Cooper s/o Alexander Cooper b.1781 SC was first married to Cassa “Cassie” Pitts in 1849 in Pickens Co., SC. Cassa “Cassie” was born 1827 Pickens Co., SC and in the 1850 census George and Cassie was living next door to Cassie’s brother, Isaac S. Pitts and living on the other side of Isaac was Cassie and Isaac’s father, Charles C. Pitts JR.
When George W. Cooper married Lucretia Ann (Day) Ellison born 14 May 1830 in Easley, Pickens Co., SC. on 9 Jun 1867 in Anderson Co., SC (Her second marriage) he was still married to Cassie (Pitts) Cooper..
If you look at the history on Divorce Laws in South Carolina you will see that they did not allow divorce in South Carolina until 1867 and it was repealed in 1878 then Divorces were allow again in 1949.
The First Divorce in South Carolina was in 1869 (New York Times and The Greenville, SC Enterprise on June 1, 1869, Wednesday). (After George married Lucretia) Men just went to another Co. and got remarried back then because they could not get a divorce.
So George W. and Cassie (Pitts) were still legally married when he married Lucretia. And if you also look at the 1860’s & 1870’s census (See Below) they do not listed George but they still list Cassie as only Keeping house not Head or Self but in the 1880 census after George W. dies they now listed Cassie as a widow and Self (which is also how they list Head). And in the 1900 census Cassie is listed as Widow
