Samuel Nathan 'Sam' Cooper, 83, Castlewood, VA, passed
away Friday, October 2, 2009, in Wellmont Regional Medical
Center.

Born June 21, 1926, in Russell County, VA, a son of the
late Joe Cooper and the late Ebbie Austin Cooper, he was a
lifelong resident of Russell County.

Sam was a retired employee of the Clinchfield Coal Company
with 35 years of service, and was a member of the U.M.W.A.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, and was a member of
the Castlewood Masonic Lodge No. 231 A.F. and A.M. and the
Lebanon Masonic Lodge No. 251 A.F. and A.M.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a
brother, Clarence Cooper; and a sister, Lucille Meade.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Kate Cooper; four
daughters, Betty Horn and husband Dorsel, Pounding Mill,
VA, Linda Osborne and husband Randy, Church Hill, TN,
Kathy Compton, Glade Spring, VA, and Glenda Stoots,
Bristol, TN; one son, Wayne Cooper, Castlewood, VA; grand-
children, Stephanie Kegley and husband David, Michael
Gilbert and wife Chandra, Jeff Compton, Michael Cooper,
Randy Osborne Jr. and wife Stephanie, Pam Salyer, Kenneth
Osborne, Jaimie Hess and husband Gary, and Ritchie Horn
and wife Amy; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Karri Gilbert,
Michaela Gilbert, Blake and Destiny Miller, Justin Hess,
Ian Horn, Noah Osborne, Matthew Osborne, David Salyer, and
Ben Osborne; one sister, Inez Jessee, Kingsport, TN; and
several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., prior
to the service at the funeral home.

Masonic rites will be conducted at 7 p.m., by the Lebanon
Masonic Lodge No. 251 A.F. and A.M. The funeral service
will be conducted at 8 p.m., Sunday, October 4, 2009, in
the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Darryl
Baker and the Rev. Charlie Killen officiating.

The committal service and interment will be at 11 a.m.,
Monday, October 5, 2009, in Temple Hill Memorial Park in
Castlewood, VA. Those attending are requested to meet at
the funeral home by 10:30 a.m., to go in procession to the
cemetery.

Military honors will be conducted by the Lebanon V.F.W.
Post No. 9864. Michael Glen Gilbert, Jeffrey Compton,
David Kegley, Michael Cooper, Randy Osborne, Ronnie
Gilbert, and Ritchie Horn will serve as pallbearers. Roger
Hurd, Bill Robinson, Gaines Purcell, and Kenneth Osborne
will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Combs Funeral Service, 291 Fincastle Road, Lebanon, VA
24266, (276) 889-4444, is serving the family of Mr. Cooper.
