I learned to look at all of the details on those census pages back in 1960 so you are not alone.<g> BTW it has come upon us that Zadoc(k) may not have been able to join a SC-CSA unit because he may have contacted measles, smallpox, malaria, cholera, typhoid, etc that was moving swiftly in the nation much less the south during the years of 1857-1863. Contagious diseases in those days got you buried fast without any fanfare of a marker. Many families were not in financial condition to afford burial in church cemeteries if they were not living near a church. There are many diaries in print pertaining to the necessity of prompt burials and burning the bedding etc. I have been trying to find old newspapers in SC that can give some idea of the details of such events.
