Reading your post it reminded me about a couple of incidents in regard to some early marriages.
Some of the ministers working their circuits would record the marriages and births as well as baptisms in a logbook that went with them until the book was fully written before they would turn them in.
Of course, this was before the states made the SOP strict for them to turn in the marriages on individual sheets per se.
From time to time you read articles about someone finding an old ministers logs or "minutes" of their trips.Sometimes when the church is moved or the new building is down the road someone keeps the books for safekeeping.
For reasons no one has been able to understand they do find these books and turn them over to historical societies when the church is no longer there.
Some times the sextant who maintains the cemetery records for years has the duty to store the marriage logs as well. When he passes on to the great beyond he may have not left word as to where he stored the books.
Just something to think about.
