Hello Anne :

Have read your Wells Forum message as well. Hope it results in some positive findings after all your hard work. Have been trying to tie down the various Coon families that were living along the St. Lawrence circa 1800. I purchased a copy of "Early Census of Elizabethtown Township 1796-1848" from the Ont. Genealogy Society, Leed's County branch, last month while we were in Brockville. If you would like, I could send you the Abraham Coon family info from that via e-mail. Of course the spelling is always iffy as you know. As far as we know, our Abraham only had one brother, Isaac, born 1786. Another Isaac was born earlier, but probably died as a baby, as it is not likely that they would give 2 living children the same name. It is quite feasable that Isaac could be the name of Patience's father, or of Abraham Sr.'s father. There is an Isaac Wells in the 1807 Elizabethtown census but he appears to be the son of Peter Wells. Unfortunately, no ages are listed. Now that is the same year that our Abraham & Patience have another Coon family staying with them - - Edward, Elenor, Mary, Hannah, Sophia, Ruby & Armenia. This family is not there in 1804. Nor do they appear in 1808. One gedcom has them listed as children of Abraham & Patience. Not very likely ! Patience must have died in 1807 or 1808, as Abraham Sr. is living
alone by that time. Am still trying to locate a burial site for her.

Before the American Revolution, Washington County, N.Y., was known as Charlotte County & if I remember correctly, the Kingsbury area was settled by J. Bradshaw of Ct. We visited that lovely area almost 30 years ago & while I found a deed in Abraham Coon's name in the Hudson Falls, Fort Edward area, I found no birth record. I have seen a reference to Vermont as well & his ancestry as Scotch, as listed in census records by his descendants.

Many of the Coon families which appeared early on in Ontario, left for greener pastures in Michigan, Ohio, Missouri & of course, Utah. Some, I think, returned to New York. I did find an Armenia Coon there but have not made the connection to Abraham.

If we & the other cousins involved keep plugging away, hopefully we will find parents for Abraham & Patience in our lifetime.

Good hunting
Libby
