Hi Rose,
Richard Coombes was my gggrandfather and I have had so much trouble with finding out anything! He lived in Romsey from around 1851 until at least 1911. He married Elizabeth Johnson and they had 4 children. I still think the registration for a birth for Richard Harris Coombs I mentioned is the most likely candidate. I can find no other Richard Coombs on the 1881 census that was born in Hampshire. I am now searching for a death for Richard, just to make sure that I do have the right one. Have you had any luck finding a birth for George? I vaguely remember seeing a registration for a birth for a Mary Harris Coombs as well, but I can't remember where. Does any of this help?
