Marilyn,
I'm struggling with this family. I have George married to Mary Ann Small Mary bapt 15/3/1840 (Mary's parents Samuel Small & Mary)Children of George - Samuel b c1867 William b c 1870 bapt 11/9/1870 West End Emily b c 1875 James b c 1877 John b c 1879. I was told this family had at least 12 children but I can only find this group on 1881 census. William married my ggrandmother Ann Dean King in Bursledon 1895. William worked on the LWS Railways as a Ganger. I can find Ann on 1891 census but not William. I am told he joined the Merchant Navy aged 12. I was also told that the Coombes lived along way from any schools and so the children did not have any schooling. William could not write so that part adds up.
