Hi Dominic
I have lots of info re my branch of the Combe/Coombe family from the Cotswolds. Basically the males in the family were nearly all following the occupation of tailor in the areas of Winchcombe, Cheltenham and Sevenhampton in Gloucestershire in the 1800s before my grandfather Thomas Hiorns Combe aged 16 migrated to Australia with his brother William in 1890. I haven't come across the name Norman yet but I'm guessing your grandfather was born around 1920,1930? and most of my research has been in much earlier years. One of my grandfather's brothers, Charles, was in America in San Diego around 1910 and may have stayed and had a family - we're not sure. There were six brothers in the generation before that which makes five that I don't know much about their descendants but some of them definitely spelt their name Coombe.
A place name would be a really useful start for you to go to all the free websites such as genuki.org.uk and check out your Coombes.
