Hi Kim, Was your grandfather, J. Dewey Cooley, the same as the Joda D Cooley I have on the website? Looking at my notes, it appears I got that name off census records. Looking at this, the only supposed descendants of the Cowleys appear to be from your Jacob. Does that look right to you? A DNA test, then, will certainly tell us something about Jacob but would tell us nothing, of course, about Abraham as there will be no one else to compare results to. I'm tempted, in fact, to take the Abrahams off that page and start it with your Jacob, making the Abrahams just a footnote. It appears there are a lot of possible testing candidates out there for the James Cooley (Pittsylvanina co) line. If your cousin tested, someone in the James line is certain to come along eventually with which to compare results. And, as I mentioned previously, there are two other tested lines of the region (my John Cooley and of Andrew Cooley) with which to compare results. The other advantage in testing is that other Jacob descendants who have not been able to prove descent would have a "standard", so to speak, with which to compare. I always recommend testing at ftdna.com, principally because they have the largest database and because thier turnaround is pretty quick, about 6 weeks. They also tie in directly with the Cooley Family DNA Project. I would certainly recommend that any male Cooley tests. The database is growing with nine (I believe) tested in my line (John Cooley of Stokes NC) and a bit more in the Benjamin Cooley line and at least two in the Daniell Cooley (MD) line. And then there are the sundry other Cooleys who have tested but haven't yet matched to any of the larger groups. The more who test, of course, the more meaningful the results will become. I'd be happy to answer any further questions. -Michael Notify Administrator about this message?
