James Vernon Cooley, 75, of Derby, formerly of Coffeyville, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2007. James was born Aug. 4, 1932 in?Independence to William Glenn Cooley and Edna Mae (Dillman)?Cooley. He was raised and educated in?Independence, where he graduated from Independence High?School in 1950. On June 23, 1951, James married Margaret Van Dolah in Independence. He entered the U.S. Air Force on March 4, 1952, serving during the Korean conflict and later during the Vietnam War; receiving the Bronze Star, Merit Service and the Air Force Accommodation medals. He retired from the Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant on June 1, 1979. They returned to Coffeyville, where he worked for Thompson Brothers Industrial Supply in sales and service for eight years. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Post #1022 and treasurer for the Retired Enlisted Association. James is survived by, his wife, Margaret of Derby; two daughters, Lynda V. Lack of Wichita, and Angela K.?Fischer of Derby; two brothers, Robert C. Cooley of Tulsa, Okla., and Donald F.?Cooley of Louisburg; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his infant son, James Richard Cooley. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Penwell-Gabel Webb?Rodrick Funeral Home and Crematory of Independence. Memorial services for James will be held at 9 a.m. tomorrow, Dec. 13, at Faith Lutheran Church, 214 S. Derby St., in?Derby. Interment to follow at 3 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.
