I probably shouldn't bother pressing this issue but you're five generations removed from the Cooleys. Only a very small portion of your DNA would be from your Cooley ancestors. The chances are phenomenally scant that the gene that is responsible for your illness passed down in the way that you describe. Why is it that you believe the Cooleys and not the Wards, the Cantrells, the Carrs, or the Terrys did not carry the gene? Furthermore, most Cooleys are not related to one another. My yDNA, for instance, has little in common with the yDNA of Benjamin Cooley's or Daniell Cooley's descendants. They just weren't of the same family. This does not mean, though, that two or more people having the same surname buried deep in the genealogy cannot have the same disease. Of course they can. It's just that genes are not inherited in that way. I do not want to minimalize your health issues but I must say that this is the way myths are perpetuated, myths that serious genealogists spend decades trying to straighten out. I'd talk to your doctor again and ask her/him if your great great grandfather James Buchanan Cooley is responsible for your illness. Once done, please post the response. Sorry to sound harsh but -this- must be said. Neverthless, I sincerely wish all the best and a very productive life. Michael Cooley Notify Administrator about this message?
