James Cooley b.1794 in NC, moves to MO then TN

Can't remember where I saw it but would like more info on several Cooley brothers from North Carolina that moved to Missouri (for what purpose?) in the early 1800s. My Cooleys
have hovered over Northern Tennesee and Southern Kentucky for over 150 years but why my great great grandfather Ervin
(aka E.C.) was born in Missouri remained a mystery. His father, James, was born in NC around 1794 and I believe he may have traveled with family members, if not his wife, Martha Bearden b. 1801 in VA, but what pulled them to Missouri? And then, of course, what drew them back east to settle in Dickson County, TN ?
