My name is Wanda Case, I live in Florence, SC now, but I was born and raised in Hendersonville, NC. My father's grandmother was Nora Capps Tabor. She was the daughter of Alexander Capps, son of John Capps, son of Cornelius Capps, son of William and Nancy Cooksey Capps.
My family home is on the Saluda Mountain just off Hwy. 176, we have lived there since 1977. When we built that house, there were only a few houses in the neighborhood, it has since grown quite a bit, but is still a very wooded area, and secluded. In my youth, my neighborhood friends and I used to stomp around in the woods, we found this old cemetery. I never knew until yesterday, that the folks buried there were my 4th Great Grandparents. I have been researching the family tree for the past year, and was discussing it with my family over Sunday lunch yesterday and while reading an excerpt from the Henderson County Heritage Vol. 1, I mentioned the where abouts of this old cemetery. I had read it before, but I didn't put the two together. I have been gone from the area a long time, and since my leaving, the neighborhood has changed some, and the name of the cemetery had come to be known as the Fortune Cemetery. Well, Mom knew this, but I didn't. I got chills all up and down my body! Here we were all of this time, just a quarter of a mile from where they were buried. Mother didn't know for sure until I went up there yesterday (in the rain) and sure enough, it is our relatives, and many others buried there...in the woods, all but forgotten. How very sad, but what a wonderful place to be!!
I would love to share more, if you are interested, email me at: mosmom3@aol.com
Good Luck with your searches,
Wanda Case
