Dear Mel and Myra.

Yes, I have communicated with both of you in the past and am very appreciative of the help you have given me. Mel, you, in particular, have given me hope where I could find none on my own. I suspect you are correct when you say that we will probably never be able to document the parents of Sarah Cooksey, born 1812, Smith or Wilson Tn. I suppose the only reason I continue to seek documentation is that I am not really comfortable claiming parents without such proof.

Myra, please read my message again. I believe you will see that my query contains the statement that Sarah's parents
"may have been" John Duncan Cooksey ... and that her
step-mother was "possibly Gilly Ann Tucker". Inasmuch as I
have not been able to document the parents of my Sarah Cooksey, I believe it is clear that I have no "documentation" regarding his middle name "Duncan" nor any other information passed on to me by other researchers. Lord, I would give just about anything to have such documentation. I shall remove the "Duncan" from my files.

My message was intended as a query only, as I continue to seek the parents of my Sarah. I thought my message was worded in such a way that it would not be interpreted as documented information. Since John Cooksey's 1822 WILL did not name Sarah as a daughter, both Mel and Tim suggested I check the 1830 Smith Tn census, which enumerated Gilly Cooksey, John's widow, as head of household. A check of this census did reveal a female of the right age to be Sarah as Sarah [Cooksey] Doughty, born 1812, would have been 18 or 19 years of age in 1830:

CENSUS ... 1830 Smith County, Texas:
Page 69, Line 4 Gilly Cooksey [Cooksy]
Males: [2] 5-10; [1] 10-15 [3] 15-20
Females: [1] 10-15; [1] 15-20; [1] 20-30; [1] 50-60; [1] 80-90

Here again...this does not prove that Sarah was a member of this family but this is one of the few families where she
is a possible family member.

John T. Cooksey is first found in Wilson Co Tn in 1813 when he purchases 69 acs from Thomas N. Cartwright. [DB E, Jan 4 1813, p560]. He didn't hold this land long as he sold it to John Bass Sep 20, 1815 [DB 6, page 173]

Five years later, there is a deed to John T. Cooksey from Daniel Johnson of Jefferson Co AL for 100 acs on both sides of Kitching Creek, July 6, 1820 [DB 1, page 173].

John T. Cooksey sold 25 acres to William Newby 1 Mar 1828
[DB N, page 53]

Although he owned land prior to 1830, he does not seem to be on the 1820 Census. John T. Cooksey may be the person listed in the 1830 Census on page 77, household #21. Entry:
2 wm 20-30 1 white female 20-30
1 wm 50-60 1 white female 50-60

I do not find him in the 1840 census for Wilson Co Tn and
this may be explained by this next deed:
P. & T. Anderson to Joseph & Benjamin Cooksey of Smith Co
for 100 acs on Round Lick Creek, DB V, Jan 25 1855, p.24.

Was John T. Cooksey deceased by 1840, and were Joseph & Benjamin his sons?

Joseph Cooksey is apparently living in Wilson Co as his name is not qualified by "Smith County" in the deed from Evan Satterfield and his wife Nancy to him for 46 acs in the 12th Civil Dist [DB V 30 Dec 1845, p327f] Cooksey sold this tract to Selah Waters [DB W, 10 Nov 1845, p244f].

Daniel Johnson sold Joseph Cooksey 333 acs in Wilson Co
9 Oct 1847 [ibid p347]. This Daniel John is suspected to
be the same person who sold 100 acs to John T. Cooksey on 6 July 1820 [above]

Robert and Lorenzo Doughty owned land lying in Wilson Co
in the waters of Kitchen's [Kitchings] Creek, a branch of
Round Lick. Robert's land was located in both Wilson &
Smith Co., Tn.

Thanks again for your input, Melba. I apologize for misleading you. But I cannot document or prove anything Cooksey prior to the marriage of Lorenzo Doughty and Sarah
Cooksey.

Mega thanks once again to Mel and Tim for all your assistance on this family.

Oh...one more interesting tidbit. I found web site on Ancestry.com wherein John Cooksey b. 1754; d. 1822 married Gilliana Flowers b. about 1775; d. aft. 1840. Their son,
Hiram Casey Cooksey and his wife Mary Jane Martin have a
daughter Gillian "Gilly Anne" Cooksey born 1845. Just another opinion??? Interesting to note that all of John's children are named and there is no Sarah Cooksey. 8-(
