Guy, Here is my theory, based upon my research of all the available records, as well as my communications with some very knowledgeable Holbrook researchers. In the "History of Shenandoah County" by Whaland, there are transcripts of birth records from Shenandoah County, Va. These include: Mary, dau. of Andrew and Barbara Cooksey b. Jan 12, 1773 I believe that this is the Mary Cooksey who married John Holbrook, Jr. Mary would have been John's second wife. There is a gap of about seven years in the ages of the children from about 1793 until about 1800. This usually only can indicate one of two things; a change in wives, or the deaths of some children. It appears that it is a change of wives. Also, Mary would have been too young to have been the mother of the oldest children. The Holbrooks were in Wilkes County, NC, which was split from adjoining Surry County. On the 1781 Surry County, NC court records, Andrew Cooksey appears as a juror. Later This John and Mary Holbrook are in Russell County, Va., on the Clinch river, and were associated with Isaac Cooksey, there. I believe that Isaac was also a son of Andrew Cooksey. An Isaac Cooksey is listed as a "musician" from the North Carolina Continental Line, although he would have been too young to be a regular in the line. There is some possibility that Isaac could have been Andrew's grandson. A John Cooksey is nearby, and we have not been able to establish a relationship for him. Other families which are associated with John and Mary Holbrook would be Large, Wheeler, Jourdan, Fugate, Collier, and Jobe, as well as several others. I believe that Mary Holbrook migrated on to Floyd and Lawrence County, Ky. after her husband's death. I am going by memory, here. If anyone is interested further, I will get my records out. I believe I have found Mary as an older single woman censused with one of her sons in 1830 in Lawrence County, Ky. I would like to communicate with anyone who has access to the archives of Durham, N. C. Or, if anyone has good knowledge on how to track muster records for North Carolina Continental Line soldiers. I would like to find the location where Isaac Cooksey joined the line, if such records exist. Thanks, Mel Cooksey arliec@ciris.net
