Louise,
Thanks for your reply to my post, and for a very good question.
The short answer is that I don't know for sure and have seen no records that prove what happened.
I posted that message to both the Cook and Cooke forums, so if you would go to the Cook forum and type in LOUER in the search box at the top left side and then go to the message with this same title and refer to the reply by Mark, his post gave us some very valuable information that suggests that she arrived in southern VA alone, or at any rate not with a Cook, and still using her maiden name, so it seems sure that she married Cook in VA.
I don't remember the year in which the certificate was granted to whoever paid for her voyage, but I am told by someone who generally knows colonial VA laws and customs very well, that the date on the certificate is AT LEAST 3 years after the headright (Roper in this case) actually arrived in VA, so that MAY mean that she arrived at least 3 years earlier.
William Jr and Joane Roper are not my ancestors, but I "think" William's father William Sr and third wife Mary Miles were, because I suspect that they had at least 2 sons, and maybe three, in addition to the two daughters who are either known or at least accepted by most researchers of this line.
You might check my other posts to this or the Cook forum, as many of them relate to the Surry / Isle of Wight Cookes.
If you have further questions or I can be of any help with other Cooke matters please do not hesitate, either here or my email below.
