William & Joane Roper married in Nov 1665 ... NOT
I don’t know when this couple married but many researchers have posted dates on 10 November 1665 and 9 or 10 April 1665, as well as dates as early as 1648.
All researchers seem to agree that they married in either Surry or Isle of Wight Co VA,but as you shall see below there must also be consideration given to the ever so slight possibility that they married in England.
Here are some records to consider concerning whether they married in Nov 1665 or not, and after that I have suggested a scenario in which they did marry in Virginia but at least a year before April 1665.
1665 Apr 10--ISLE OF WIGHT CO VA court
William Cooke in open court acknowledged the following power of attorney:
I William Cook having marryed Joane, one of the daughters of Hugh Roper of Burnccham in the county of Somerset [England] doe make Mr Geo Start of Bristol my lawful attorney to demand the legacy bequeathed to my wife by her sd father in his will;witnessed by Thos Walter, Jno Lewis.
That proves they were married before 10 Nov 1665.Here is the only Cook record I can find for that date:
1665 Nov 10--ISLE OF WIGHT CO VA
William Cooke Jr to Thos Woodward, for 3000 lbs of tobacco, 300a upon a branch of Blackwater, upon land where Phillip Hanifor was living;witnessed by R’o Hae, John Thomas.
Now, inasmuch as William’s father-in-law Hugh Roper seems by all accounts to have died in England, there is some question as to whether William went to England to marry Joane, or married her in VA, in which case the question becomes how it was that the unmarried Joane was in VA without her father.
The most likely scenario would seem to be that her father did come to VA and then returned to England, leaving behind his married daughter, in which case the marriage must have been some time before the April 1665 date---see below---in order to allow time for Hugh to return to England, which presumably was not immediately after Joane married, and then probably a certain lapse of time before Hugh died, and then more time for the news to reach VA.Thus I estimate that the couple married AT LEAST one year before April 1665 and perhaps somewhat longer.
It would be interesting to see Hugh’s will to see if indeed he referred to his daughter as Joane Cooke. If he did not, which would be surprising, then what was the date of the will ?
If anyone has any evidence or opinion to add to this please do post it,for there seem to be many and varying opinions as to when / where they married.
