Sources-Lydia Cook Hinkle Hutchings b.1758,d. 1831 daughter of Abel Cook, Sr. (1)NSDAR lineage file #138314 (Mary Margaret Hutchings, Crawfordsville, IN Montgomery Co. Chapter, applied for DAR membership in 1918, died 1960), DAR Lineage Book CXXXIX;p. 102). In her DAR file is a letter from her father, Benjamin F. Hutchings. He states that the Hutchings family bible burned in a house fire, so this is oral family tradition. Benjamin says Gabriel Hutchings married a widow, Lydia Cook Hinkle. Her husband (Joseph Hinkle), in company with Abel Cook and another man, while on a trip from Butler Co. Ohio to Columbia(now part of Cincinnati), about 1791 or 1792, were attacked by indians. Abel Cook was a Rev. veteran, but Benjamin didn't know if he was a brother or father to Lydia Cook Hinkle. Shortly after this, Lydia married Gabriel and lived in Butler Co. Ohio, and then Fayette Co. Ind where Gabriel died. To them were born 6 children. From other family data Benjamin mentioned, Benjamin's father could only have been Samuel Hutchings, one of Gabriel Hutchings sons. On her application to join the DAR, M.M. Hutchings said her information was from her father, Benjamin F. Hutchings, his mother (Lydia would have been this woman's mother-in-law), and older brother. She said she got ages and births partly from tombstones. (2)Ancestral charts from Ruth Avis Flack McKnight of Indianapolis, IN in 1993. Ruth is a descendent of Joseph Hinkle's brother Wendle Hinkle. She was working with Paula Jo Parker Reed France, a descendent of Joseph Hinkle and Lydia Cook Hinkle Hutchings. She used references in the "state library and in the Henckel Genealogy". Her family group record shows Lydia Cook's father to be Abel Cook, Sr. Ruth McKnight lists Joseph Hinkle and Lydia Cook's children to be Asa, Ziba (who married Abigail Hays Cook), Henry, John, and Joseph.I hope this helps. (My appologies to Erik Conrad from Denver who also was interested in the Abels question. I had to change PC setups and lost his 2/17/99 query.) I would appreciate any information on Abel Cook, Sr. and the earlier generations of the Cook family.
