There is a LOT of stuff posted on the Internet, including Genforum, Rootsweb, Ancestry, the Family History site, and elsewhere, that says that Walter Cooke of Weymouth & Mendon, Mass was born in Leeds, England, was born in 1618, had two wives named Experience Holbrook and Catherine Brenton, and a host of other garbage. There is absolutely NO proof of where in England Walter Cook came from. There is also absolutely no proof of his age, at any time in his life. Therefore, it is impossible to say when he was born. There are at least 17 different Walter Cooke's that I am aware of, that were born in England between 1610-1620. Any of them MIGHT have been the Walter of Weymouth/Mendon, but none of them may have been him too. As to wives: The records in Weymouth record the mother of his children as being Experience. No surname is listed at all, there is no marriage record, nothing else. When he died in Mendon, he was married to Catherine, who died 2 days after he did. Again, there is absolutely no evidence that Catherine was a Brenton, as there is no recording of her surname. It could be that the Mendon records recorded the wrong name. It could also be that Walter had 2 wives. It could be that one was a Holbrook and one was a Brenton. But it could also be that neither was a Holbrook or a Brenton. There simply is not one shred of evidence either way that proves anything. It is all conjecture. There are tons of genealogies on the net that show all kinds of things about Walter Cooke and his family. But, until he was made a Freeman in Weymouth, not one thing can be proven about him at all. Please, if you have any REAL evidence (not someone's posted genealogy, but actual evidence) as to when/where he was born, and/or who his wife/wives were, post them.
