CAREFUL! "Malvern Hill" was the ancestral home of the CoCke family. Cocke, not Cooke.

James Powell Cocke was for a time in Amelia County, VA. Maps of that county have him listed as both "Cocke" & "Cook". It is common to see it written both ways.

In fact, in the not too distant past, I was asked how I spelled my name: "C-o-c-k-e or C-o-o-k". Apparently the pronunciation of some of the surviving old-timers is both ways.

Many of the "CoCke" line in Amelia are buried at Grubb Hill Church in Amelia.

Interestingly, my line of COOKES & these COCKES she MANY common given names: Abraham, William, Stephen, James, Agnes, to name a few.

Jim Cooke
Richmond, VA
