I wish you good luck with your research. On my mother's side of the family, I was able to go back to the year 700 A.D. And that was just research. Once I took a DNA test and found other participants that had the same y-chromosome that I did, that can only be passed down from father to son, that led to the research of others. Paper trails die out, but DNA continues on. If I find someone who is related to William Cook and Elisabeth Howe and they have the same y-chromosome, then I just got my father's family line from 1958-1630, that's 328 years of history based on DNA. There are different places that charge different prices. I took my test through http://www.dnaheritage.com/ the Cook DNA project uses http://www.familytreedna.com/ and there is another place that will send a kit out for free, it is just a database that collects the information with any info that you provide such as family tree info and that site is http://smgf.org/ keep me posted in your research...thanks...
Steve
