DNA testing has now helped to answer many questions involving a number of Cook(e) familes in VA, all present in the early to mid-Eighteenth Century. Specifically, the lines of John Cooke of Cumberland County, VA(ca1700-1775); Shem Cooke(ca1722-1792,NC) & John Cooke(d1782), both in Amelia County, VA in the 1750's; Mordecai Cooke of Gloucester County, VA. There had been much research & speculation as to the relationship b/w these lines; many felt they were all related. But DNA evidence seems to indicate otherwise. To be fair, DNA testing can tell these participants if they are related, genetically, to one another; it cannot "prove" a paper trail. The testing results were these: 1. A descendant of John Cooke of Cumberland proved to be related to a desc. of Clayton Cooke of VA & to a descendant of J.C. Cook(born ca1812) of TN. This confirms the believed relatedness b/w Clayton Cooke & John Cooke. Clayton, it is believed, was a son of William Cooke(d1752,Hanover,VA), and nephew of William's bro. John Cooke(ca1700-1775) of Cumberland. Further, it is believed that William & John were sons of Abraham Cooke & Martha Clayton. The paper trail from these two to JC Cook of TN has yet to be established. However, differences in the 37-marker results b/w these three lines, though slight, will help to better define these three branches of the same tree. 2. A descendant of Shem Cooke(d1792) proved related to a descendant of John Cook(d1782). This confirms the belief that Shem & John, both in the Amelia County, VA Militia in the 1750's, were brothers. Like above, these two participasnts have one genetic difference in their 25-marker results. This will help differentiate one branch from the other as more participant descendants are tested. 3. One participant claiming descent from Mordecai Cooke of Gloucester County, VA was tested. None of the above descendants showed related. Conclusions: If true (and more tests are needed to confirm) neither Shem Cooke, supposed born in Gloucester, VA in 1722, nor John, his brother, were related to Mordecai Cooke. Also, Abraham Cooke, believed-father of John Cooke & William Cooke(father of Clayton) was not related to Mordecai. It appears that three distinct lines of Cookes have been determined.
