"I also found some ancestors that are in history books, on my dad's side of the family; however, I'm not going to go into that here with you, as you would probably also try to claim that somehow, it is probably not true."
You are making a rather huge assumption here! I have no reason to claim anything like that and this has nothing to do with the issue I raised.
"The distant cousins whom I DO know are from my family, are members of the Mayflower Society. They did all the hard work in 'proving' these lines. Or, perphaps, you feel that the Society's rules in finding proof isn't thorough enough??"
I never said anything about the society's rules. I simply said that I could give a hoot about the Mayflower Society! I'm just not interested in being a member of any society. They should and do have very strict guidelines. You could go so far as to say they are "anal" about it!
And to continue with the anal comment...yes, genealogy is a hobby for most of the people you will find on these boards. For some...it is alot more than that. It is a job, a life-long commitment to being as historically accurate as possible. They HAVE to be "anal" about it! They can't just go on faith. Good thing...or we "hobbiests" wouldn't have the information that is available today!
I think we agree in principle. Actually, you said it best, and I quote,(again!)...
"I have noticed that some people, obviously in a hurry to post something, will type a bunch of stuff on these sites on people that aren't even their ancestors____sometimes not even distant relatives. Many times the dates don't even make sense; when I contact them about it, they just say,"oh, I don't really know anything about them; I just copied what someone else gave me", etc. And no, I really do not approve of that."
And again, I wish you good hunting. Leslie
