One must remember that record keeping of births was unheard of during that era; in fact, in rural areas of the U.S., birth, death, and marriage records were not kept on a regular basis before the late 1800's, as it was not required. I descend from Francis and Hester Mahieu Cooke, through their son Josiah, who was born in Leyden in 1610. It appears that as a Separatist, Francis had first gone to the Netherlands from Gides Hall, Essex or Blyth, Yorkshire (west) England in order to practice his religious beliefs. While there, he met and married Hester, who was Dutch. These early Puritans found more freedom there than in England, but their children were starting to grow up "Dutch" with the language, and they wanted them to be more like Englishmen. This, plus it was very difficult to survive in Holland because they could hardly make a living, they decided to try for the New World. I have for a birth date for Francis, as Nov. 26, 1584 in Yorkshire, England. He died April 7, 1663 in Plymouth, Mass. He married Hester on June 30, 1603 in Leyden,South Holland. I have a date on Hester's death as being June 18, 1666 in Plymouth. Some of this information came from the FAMILY SEARCH Ancesetral file. pfg Notify Administrator about this message?
