COOKE: Stokes & Surry, NC
Posted by: James Edward Cooke Date: December 03, 1998 at 18:52:30
  of 2471

I seek to prove or disprove the assertion that Phillip Cooke, Peyton Skipwith Cooke, Grove Cooke, et als were issue of James Cook(e), AND that this James Cook was a son of John Cooke(died 1775) of Cumberland County, VA.
I descend from John Cooke through his grandson Stephen Cooke(ca1774-1845),son of James Cooke(died 1782) & Anna Ford.
Some have suggested that James, son of John, was father to Phillip, Peyton, Grove, that he was born ca1740 in Orange County, VA, & that he settled in Surry, NC. "Surry" James died after 1813 in Stewart County, TN. Though I CAN prove Stephen was John's grandson through
John's son James, I cannot conclusively prove that: (1)James of Surry was not MY John's son.
(2)the James who died 1782 in Cumberland County, Virginia was the James listed in John's will.
Any help appreciated.
