I am descended from John COOKE(died 1775) of Cumberland County, VA. Seeking proof as to his parents & ancestry. His issue: John jr; Stephen; James;Elizabeth; Agnes; Agatha; Mary; Frances; Anne; Sarah. Probably had siblings William(son,Clayton);Frances. Believe he was son of Abraham Cooke and Martha(believed a Clayton). William & John patented land in Goochland, now Cumberland, in 1740. William died in Hanover, ca1752.
Other siblings were probably Abraham Cooke, Jr(d1748,Lunenburg,VA); Benjamin Cooke, Sr(d1759,Hanover,VA). Also Matthew & Hannah, since Abraham & Martha were known to have had these two per St Peters Parish Records, New Kent.
Most info points to Abraham as John's father. However, some suggests he was John of Spotsylvania(who patented 1000 acres) & therefore from Essex, VA. Other info suggests a tie to Mordecai Cooke of Gloucester.
Abraham Cooke, SR was in Old Rappahanock County as early as 1670's.
Any info or suggestions appreciated.
