JACOB ROSS, son of FRANCIS and MARGARET ROSS, was born Nov. 8th, l844, at Pittsburgh, Pa., and departed this life at Leon, Iowa, December l6, l92l, aged 77 years, one month and eight days.He came with his parents to Oskaloosa, Iowa, at an early age, and soon afterward removed to Decatur county, where he spent the rest of his life.
He was united in marriage to JULIA COFFEE, at Leon, March 29, l866.She passed away on March 29, l900, on the anniversary of their wedding day.To this union were born ten children, seven are still living, as follows: ALBERT, of Towner, Colorado; MRS. R.F. HEWLETT, of Grand River, Iowa; GEORGE F., of Kellerton, Iowa; ANDREW T., of Pleasanton, Iowa; MRS. DAISY SMITH, of Leon; MRS. P.H. MITCHELL, of Medford, Oklahoma; MRS. W.M. RICHEY, of Emporia, Kansas.The rest died in infancy.He is also survived by one sister, MRS. ELIZABETH COOK, of Ellston, Iowa.
He enlisted in the service of his country as a private in Company K, Thirty-ninth Infantry, August 22, l862, and was honorably mustered out at the close of the war, after three years of service.He was a faithful and loyal soldier.He was raised in a Presbyterian home, his parents being faithful members of that church.He, himself, was converted thirty-five years ago in the Holiness Church, and lived in that faith until his death.He died Friday, Dec. l6th, his death following shortly after a paralytic stroke which he suffered a few days before.His closing days were peaceful, and he passed away quietly.
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for though art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."
The funeral services were held Sunday, December l3th, from the Presbyterian Church and burial followed in the Leon Cemetery.
