In Reply to: Coogans from Kilkenny by Mary Coogan of 179

Hi Mary! I know this message was from last year so I'm hoping you will still be able to see my reply or even know I did so. My Mom's dad is from Kilkenny-John Coogan-b.1897 I think. He died in 1959. His parents were a Catherine O'Neil and James Coogan I believe. I've heard stories that his mom used to be a nun before she got married. I know he had 2 brothers-Henry and I can't remember the other one and a sister named Mary who was a nanny and lived in London for a while. My Mom's Dad enlisted in the British Army and was all over the place. He finally moved here to the States(New York City-have no idea when. He married Anna Carman but did so under the O'Neil name-we think he might have already been married to someone else or was running from something. His marriage license stated that he was born in the States which wasn't true. Anwway, he and Anna had 10 children. I know my Aunt Peggy(Margaret) has been doing some research and has hit a wall when it comes to Ireland. So if the names sound familar let me know.

Sue
