She always went by Catherine or her nickname, Kate In 1888 she and her brother, Michael, left for America on the Ohio which sailed from Liverpool and landed in NYC on Monday, June 4, 1888. According to ship's records their destination was Wisconsin According to stories Catherine told, there was only enough money for one to travel further so Michael stayed in NYC to work and save money so he could join his sister later. Catherine ended up in Iowa and married Patrick Lane there on January 22, 1889. She longed to return to Ireland to live. She did return twice. Once she was there a year, staying with her mother and some of her siblings in Castleblayney and gave birth to her son, Michael, there in Dec. 1902. A second time she returned and stayed only overnight. We very much want to know how Catherine ended up in Iowa when the destination was listed as Wisconsin. With whom did she stay? Where was she from June of 1888 until her marriage in January 1889? According to the 1901 census in Ireland, Margaret COOGAN (a widow) resided on York St. in Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan with three of her children: Patrick, Francis, and Mary Ann.
