Archibald Coody- Native American Connection
Author: Bonnie Rapert
Archibald Coody, a Cherokee Indian, was also called Arthur and Archie Coody. He was an interperter for the British during the Revolution, he was with a party of Cherokees that attacked the John Donelson flotilla headed for Nashville in the spring of 1780. He served as interperter at the treaty of Hopewell in 1785, and escorted prisoner Samuel Handley back to the white settlements in 1792. He lived at Lookout Mountian Town in 1793 and was interperter at the treaty made at Philadelphia in 1794. He was likely the brother to Nancy Coody, who was living with the British agent named Clements in 1782. It is thought that Archibald Coody was the fahter of Joseph, Charles( who also had a son named Archibald ,thus confusing things to a great degree), James, Sarah ( who married George Fields Sr.), Elizabeth ( who married John Rogers), and Nannie ( who married James Rogers).
Another Archibald Coody was a white resident among the Cherokees for a short time,he was born in 1801, and was the son of Zephaniah Coody. In 1809, while his father was overseer for Chief James Vann, Archibald attended school at Spring Place Mission in Mississippi. In 1809-1810 he, along with his parents settled in Yazoo County, Mississippi anmd remained in that state until his death in 1887. He was married to Elizabeth Haining, who was born in South Carolina in 1805, and was the father of Penniah ( b. Sept. 2, 1825 - d 1886), Mary Jane (b. 1827 married a Hamberlin), Emily Virginia ( b. May 25, 1840), John Alexander ( b. 1844), and Silas ( B 1849). The father of this Archibald Coody ( Zephanniah) was a white resident among the Cherokees said to have been born in Scotland about 1770. He became overseer of the plantation of his cousin, Chief James Vann in Georgia in 1802. When James Vann died, Zephanniah moved to Warren County, Mississippi where he died in 1880. Among Zephanniah's children are: Zephanniah Jr., John, Caroline, Irena, and Anna. There are, of course, other Coody's, and some of them also had connections with Native Americans, a good source for this information is a book entitled "WHO WAS WHO AMONG THE SOUTHERN INDIANS 1698 - 1907." by Don Martini.
[NI10808] I have found through the 1870 Federal Census that my great grandfather, Henry Carter Coody, was born in Mississippi. Also, that a Lewis M. Coody, who resides at Bentonia, Miss., tells me his grandfather, "Arch" Coody born in 1800 came to Mississippi in 1812 and settled in the western part of Mississippi. They (he and his family) came from Georgia, around the coast and up the Mississippi River to the section near Vicksburg, Miss.

Daniel Ross Coody was a prominent man in the Cherokee Nation and is mentioned extensively in The Chronicles of Oklahoma, a more than 50 volume collection of Genealogical and Historical accounts of the people of Oklahoma. There is a set in the Dallas Public Library. Daniel was the brother of William Shorey Coody and the nephew of John Ross, who was the principle chief of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee during the infamous "Trail of Tears". Since Daniel's mother (Jennie Ross) was at most 1/8th Cherokee and his father (Joseph Coody) was at most 1/2, Daniel was at most 1/16th. There is a whole political situation among the Cherokees concerning John Ross' opposition to ceeding the Eastern Lands to the US Government ( a fight he lost ) and his assuption of the reigns of Cherokee government in the West after his arrival in 1834-85. Wonderful reading if you are interested in history.
