Through a census index at Ancestry.com I developed a lead for Timothy CONWAY, 1880 census, Clarke County, Washington, Vancouver City. pg 76.
Our local FHC happened to have the pertinent film. The Timothy turned out to be one of three boys, John, Timothy, and Thomas Conway, ages 8, 6, and 4 who were living in the "House of Providence" and were listed as "homeless."
The birthplace shown was Washington; however, the Washington appeared in ( ), perhaps indicating a guess or assumption on someone's part?
The residents of Vancouver City in 1880 included an interesting mix: midwest transplants of all nationalities, perhaps 200 soldiers, 50 Chinese woodcutters, nuns and nuns-in-training in a large convent, 20 or so Indian prisoners, and a trapper whose name was listed as "Joe Indian."
Anyone connect to the three homeless CONWAY boys?
