A biography of George Benjamin Conway, Helena, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 1100 & 1101. George was born 17 Dec 1859 in Wheeling, VA, which four years later became the capitol of the new state of West Virginia. Father: William B. Conway, born 1837, Abersuchyn, Wales, and came to the US ca 1856, living first in New York and then in Wheeling, following his trade as iron worker in both places. In 1871, he became the manager of Captal City Ironworks at Indianapolis, IN, until 1880. He moved to Youngstown, OH, where he dealt in iron specialties; 1886-1888 moved to Montana where he was interested in mining in Glendale, MT; returned east to Buffalo, NY, where he died in 1900. Mother: Lenora Harriet Smith, born 1840, Kent, England, died near Oil City, PA, in 1870. Children: George B. (Helena, MT), William (owner of a newspaper in Wilmington, PA), Emily (died in infancy).
George received most of his schooling in Wheeling and attended high school in Indanapolis. At age 14 he was a messenger boy in the Capitol City Ironworks for two years and from 1879 to 1881 he was employed by the E.C. Atkins Saw Works in Indianapolis. On 4 Apr 1881, George located to Glendale, MT, and became an official of the Hecla Consolidated Mining Company. In 1909, he was appointed State Accountant and moved his home to Helena, MT. After four years he became secretary and general manager of the Montana Livestock and Cattle Company.
In 1881, Indianapolis, MN, George married Miss Lillie E. Hunt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Hunt. Conway children: Helen (Mrs. William Cushing, an attorney at Dillon, MT), Julia (died age 6), Florence (Mrs. A.H. French, a mine operator at Argenta, MT), Ora and Alice (teachers in Helena), Ruth (Mrs. Gustav Bohstedt), Walter Lincoln (Columbia Falls, MT), Eunice (Helena, MT).
